Hard to Fit Contacts

Hard-to-Fit Contacts

In an ideal world, it would be easy to find the contacts you need at any ophthalmologist or optometrist you visit. However, it's not always that simple. Not every practitioner carries the same contact lenses when it comes to people who have prescriptions beyond the usual. Fortunately, Dr. Ligon of Hardeman County Vision Center, serving Bolivar and the nearby region, offers these specialized contacts.

General Information

"Hard-to-fit contacts" is a general term used by an ophthalmologist or optometrist to describe contacts that are for a specific condition or have a prescription that isn't commonly seen in patients. One prime example is astigmatism. With this condition, your eye isn't shaped like a ball, as a normal eye is. Instead, it's shaped more like a football. As a result, when light shines, it doesn't hit the retina. Rather, it scatters, causing issues with distance vision and possibly even your up-close vision. But, with hard-to-fit contacts, particularly ones for astigmatism or toric lenses, the light is redirected.

Not every eye doctor you visit will have Ortho-K. That's because these lenses require a specialized fitting process, and they aren't like average contacts you wear all day for vision correction. You only wear these at night. They reshape your eyes as you sleep, and you have vision correction for the entire day. Bifocals and trifocals are also hard-to-fit contacts because they require vision correction for different distances. Others fall into this category as well.

Assessing Your Vision

You may already know you need specialized contacts before you come to us. However, if you're unsure, our optometrist can evaluate your vision, take measurements of your eyes, and evaluate your eye health. Based on the results of this examination, we can decide if you have a vision deficit, to what degree, and what the best type of contacts are for you, even if you need hard-to-fit lenses.

Getting Fitted

After your routine vision and eye health examination, our optometrist will conduct a contact lens fitting. This part of the exam doesn't cause any pain, nor does it take long. You merely look into a device that'll take the dimensions of your eyes. Within a few minutes, our optometrist can tell what size of contacts you need. Keep in mind that the size may vary from eye to eye, the same as the prescription from eye to eye varies.
