At Hardeman County Vision Center in Bolivar, TN, our optometrist, eye Dr Ligon, and our eye care team are here to support your eye health. Here, we'll explore the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for age-related macular degeneration.
What Is Macular Degeneration?
Age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, occurs when a part of the retina, known as the macula, becomes damaged. People with AMD struggle to fully use their central vision. Objects in their peripheral vision are still visible, but objects directly in front of them, close or far, are harder to see clearly.
AMD is common, and rarely causes complete blindness. Some factors make the development of AMD more likely, including having a family history of AMD, having hypertension, being over the age of 50, being overweight, and eating a diet high in saturated fat.
Symptoms of Macular Degeneration
Symptoms for AMD are highly individual, but there are some that most people with the condition tend to experience, including:
⢠Blurry or fuzzy vision
⢠Dark or empty areas in the center of the field of vision
⢠Difficulty recognizing friends and family members
⢠Straight lines take on a wavy appearance
⢠Loss of central vision
Is There a Cure for AMD?
There is not a cure for AMD, but you may be a good fit for treatments that can slow its progression, such as anti- VEGF injections. Our eye doctor will talk with you about your condition and whether it makes sense to try treatment to slow down your AMD. Our eye doctor may also recommend nutritional changes that can slow AMD progression.
